Woven from fine, breathable 100% wool gauze, this lightweight veil offers a soft, fluid drape and natural grip designed for historical living history and reenactment. Its subtle texture stays comfortably in place when pinned or folded, creating an authentic silhouette without slipping.

Craftsmanship & Historical Context

I craft these veils using Early Medieval techniques, specifically rooted in my own reenactment focus on the 9th and 10th centuries. However, thanks to the timeless nature of simple wool gauze and hand-finished hems, these pieces are versatile enough to fit portrayals across the entire Middle Ages, right through to the late medieval period. The only nuance to keep in mind for later centuries would be specific color theory or social color symbolism, which evolved over time depending on your historical persona.

Each veil measures approximately 60 × 140 cm, with slight natural variations resulting from the heat and movement of the dye bath. To maintain a completely authentic historical finish, the hems are entirely hand-stitched in the workshop using either pure linen or silk thread, selected to harmoniously match each colorway based on thread availability.

Botanical Dye Palette

The colors are achieved strictly through traditional natural dye vats, mirroring the historic plant-based color palette famously found on La Tapisserie de Bayeux:

Yellow: Weld (Reseda luteola)

Blue: Natural Indigo (Indigofera tinctoria)

Green: Over-dyed combining weld and indigo

Red: European Madder root (Rubia tinctorum)

Pink: Cochineal (Dactylopius coccus, insect, non-vegan)

Artisanal Variations & Historical Approach

Because every veil is individually hand-dyed in small batches, subtle tonal shifts, soft mottling, or light variations in saturation occur naturally, reflecting genuine vat dyeing and making each piece unique.

For the pink colorways, Mexican cochineal is used as a deliberate choice for ethical and practical reasons. Native European scale insects, such as Polish cochineal or Kermes (Kermes vermilio), are either legally protected, critically endangered due to pesticides, or priced at prohibitive rates reaching up to €31,000 per kilogram. Utilizing Mexican cochineal allows for an historically accurate pink hue while keeping the garment ethical and accessible.

Care Guidelines & Aging of Natural Dyes

To protect the wool fibers and preserve the botanical pigments:

Washing: Hand-wash gently in cool or lukewarm water using a pH-neutral wool detergent or mild soap.

Drying: Do not tumble dry. Gently press out excess water without wringing, and lay flat to dry in the shade, away from direct sunlight.

Natural Aging: I dye all wools using historical colorfast dyestuffs (grands teints) designed for durability. However, unlike modern synthetic chemical dyes, natural botanical pigments are living colors that evolve. With repeated wear, washing, and long-term exposure to ambient light and elements, the shades may gently soften, mellow, or develop a natural historical patina over time.
